Global Warming: Ways of Reducing and Combating

Global warming is currently considered amongst the major disasters facing the globe. It is worrying that global warming is increasingly affecting the world and is caused by human activities.

Background problem

The continuous rise in global temperatures is currently the cause of worry for everyone in the world. Whilst we may never exactly predict climate, there is clear and strong evidence that global warming is taking place. Global warming is currently considered amongst the major disasters facing the globe. It is worrying that global warming is increasingly affecting the world and is caused by human activities. Global warming is a serious phenomenon which failure to tackle it can lead to dire consequences (Shahzad, 2012).  Global warming denotes the mean temperature increase in the surface or cover of the earth. Global warming gets worse by the day as reports indicate that over the last century, temperatures have drastically increased and the trend is projected to continue (Hussein, 2013). Since global warming is a phenomenon that if unchecked and resolved leads to dire effects both to the ecology and human life, this paper discusses ways in which global warming can be reduced and combated.

Efficient energy use

Efficient energy use and conservation measures should be undertaken so as to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions. As Bellona’s report indicates, industries which are fired by coal, gases, and biomass converts just a small percentage of their energy into useful power (Bellona Foundation, 2008). Power plants fired by coal convert merely 37% of the energy for use, those fired by gas convert 50%, while those powered by biomass convert only 26%. This means that much energy is lost and the rest of the energy accumulates into greenhouse gases which eventually lead to global warming. To address this situation, efficient energy use that employs power plants which use energy well reduces greenhouse gases by infinite amounts which reduce global warming.

Renewable energy sources

Introduction and use of renewable energy sources in industries transport and power plants will drastically reduce global warming. Renewable sources of energy have limitless potential to be converted into utilizable forms of energy. Recent technological advancement has brought sustainable energy systems which can be attained from technical as well as economic perspective. Shahzad (2015) argues that the continued use of fossil fuels leads to greenhouse effects which consequently cause global warming; therefore, there is a need to embrace energy sources which reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. Use of solar, wind, bioenergy, hydropower, geothermal, wave, tidal, and salt as sources of energy do not produce any kind of pollutants or toxic gases thus is good for reduction of global warming (Shahzad, 2012). These sources of energy are naturally clean. These energy sources do not result in any form of pollutants or toxic gases which can result in global warming. After all, continuous use of fossil fuel will eventually deplete the fossil fuels and everyone will be forced to venture into renewable energy sources. This, therefore, is one major way of combating and reducing global warming.

Social awareness

One other possible way of combating and reducing global warming is by conducting social media campaigns in support of a safe environment (Denchak, 2017). Awareness campaigns should be conducted where posters, placards, and logos are strategically placed in locations which can be noticed. Governments should impose taxes on non-renewable sources and provide incentives for individuals who use renewable energy sources. Such a tax would be like the US carbon tax. This helps in making fossil fuel expensive and motivates people to use green sources of energy. Global governments should follow suit and agree in unison to fight the menace that has become of the global warming. Concerted efforts should be undertaken to build a carbon capture and storage facilities which permanently destroys carbon emissions. Populations should be urged to use vehicles which produce fewer emissions and stickers put on their vehicles to remind them of how much pollution their vehicles are emitting (Probst, n.d.).

Proper land use and management are requisite for reducing global warming. The growth of natural vegetation binds carbon dioxide. Bellona report contends that land-use practices and clearing of forests increases carbon dioxide concentration thus increasing global warming. Proper land use land by proper management and reforestation helps in making the environment a natural CO2 sink (Bellona Foundation, 2008). Smart land management and planning practices such as enacting policies that aim at increasing vegetation cover will help in the management of concentration of carbon dioxide. Governments and indeed every person in the world should support measures that restrict deforestations of rainforests since this will enable proper land-use making forests a natural sink and absorber of carbon dioxide.

A change in human lifestyle and increased public awareness programs are necessary to combat global warming. Dietz et al (2009) state that irresponsible and ignorant human behaviors and the use of daily use of products have affected the environment and led to global warming. The transport sector contributes to most of the pollutants and emissions. People travel by planes, cars, and trains which exhume lots of the pollutants which accumulate into greenhouse gases. Therefore, people need to be made aware of this malady and exhorted to use public transport, use non-pollutants such as bikes, share cars, use electric or hybrid vehicles and reduce their flights. Individually, every person contributes to global warming in their daily use of bulb, electronics, and other appliances. People should use energy-efficient bulbs; disconnect electrical appliances when they are not using them, use cold water for their utilities, and winterizing their households to prevent heat escape. A change in consumer behaviors in all sectors is necessary to stem out human practices causing global warming (Dietz, 2009).

In addition, as the Natural Resources Defense Council in their 2010 report noted, consumer behaviors at home and work contribute immensely to global warming. They proposed a number of steps upon which emissions would be curbed by large amounts and they include; cutting the number of flights, proper vehicle maintenance by use of recommended oil grades, reducing car weights, and ensuring good engine working conditions. NRDC proposed reduced idling with vehicles, use of compact fluorescent bulbs, eating much of dairy and less meat to avoid deforestation to give space for products of meat, and increased recycling efforts (Natural Resources Defense Council, 2010). For example, Hussein (2013) surmises that recycling soda cans lowers the emission of greenhouse gases by 95 percent. There is a necessity to use energy efficiently both at home and at offices since some results into carbon dioxide emissions. Efficient energy use leads to reduced energy demands and organizations should also consider employing renewable energy sources.

There is a need for concerted efforts from everyone within the global community for global conservancy efforts. The Union of Concerned Scientists in their publication, have indicated the significance of international negotiations as part of environmental conservancy issues. Political leaders should come together and enact comprehensive solutions to climate changes. Governments and global agencies should all come together to support each other in ideas and policies as well as implementation so that the global community can concertedly seek to reduce global warming (UCS, n.d.). It is easier to combine efforts and transition into a clean economy as a whole than as single entities. Political leadership has a responsibility to ensure that their populace become aware of the dangers of global warming and know what actions they should undertake to reduce it.

Global warming has dire effects on the ecological system and living beings if it is not properly handled. Human beings play a key role in the whole issue of global warming.  The primary ways in which global warming can be reduced and combated is by efficient energy use and conservation, use of renewable energy sources, recycling, change in consumer habits, and intergovernmental efforts to save the environment. It is therefore very necessary to undertake remedial solutions to global warming to prevent further damage. We can learn from this paper that global warming can successfully be reduced and combated altogether if proper actions are taken.
