Guest Lecture Response

Question: What function does sound and trance theory play in Jack Ryan’s presentation? How does he utilize sound and trance theory to whet models of mental mindfulness in people? How is his performance different from the other artists we have discussed?

In Jack Ryan’s presentation, the audience’ cognitive mindfulness and relaxation are stimulated by the use of the sound bath, a phenomenon where the performer imagines audience as bodies or things void of organs which extend to celebrate physicality and multiplicity as they enter the room. Then, sound and trance theory is used for composition, performance, and transmission of frequency arrangements. The audience is immersed in sound frequency that seeks to get to their minds (Main : JACK RYAN).

Sound and trance theory refers to the impacts the performance will have on the mental psychological structure of an individual but physical components for this case ears and eye will be used as the impetus to achieve this. Jack Ryan’s performance involves superimposition of sounds, of different frequencies that have different and diverse impacts on the minds of the audience but generally, the dream states of the audience are activated but in fusion with elevated operative awareness of the audience. By a series of pre-recorded sounds, blended sounds and corroboration of band content at the diverse alteration of beta and theta rate of ranges, the brainwave of the audience is whetted to focus on the art and not on the mode of delivery. Superimposition of the beta and theta frequencies at dissimilar speed is concentrated variedly in the brain, by a pattern referred to as moiré, and the audience is “tuned” in this condition.

Jack Ryan further augments his soft “assault” on the minds of his audience by introducing the oeuvres of “Scriabin’s Moustache” to make them create and explore thoughts and continue with meditation and personal retrospection of sounds in fantasy world and realms. His other art “Obtuse Isometric Electronics” acoustic electronics and broadcast devices further serve his bespoke. He focuses his performance on making every single member of the audience imagine, in the same fantasy state. Supplemented by sound, the audience’s time and perception are ultimately tampered with and they flow with the performer’s directive.

In comparison to artworks such as “PaCiFiC SkY ExHiBiTiOnS” by Avantika Bawa and Erin Moore, Jack Rayn’s performance rather appeals to audience’s intuition while Avantika’s art appeals to the eye and it will require an interested audience to appreciate his work. However, the two arts of work leave the audience in admiration and appreciation. “The McGurk Effect” by BBC TWO is quite similar to Jack Rayn since it also informs the audience’s sense views. It encompasses individual experiences from the surrounding which forms the audience’s knowledge. Perception is formed by memories and emotions all these supplement sense perceptions as the worth and importance we place concerning similar beliefs and feelings. In general, the speaker’s lecture, by use of sound and trance theory that encompassed pre-recorded sounds and synthesized sounds fully captivated the attention of the audience enabling him to achieve his intent of opening models of the audience’s cognitive mindfulness. The moiré effect on the audience clearly captured the intuition of every individual, pushing the speaker’s ideologies home.
